William David Jackson first appears in the records of Washington Co, VA on the 1828 tax list. He is listed for only 3 years total, 1828 - 29 & 30. More research is needed to determine why he is listed for only these years. In 1829 he is living on the South Fork and in 1830 there is a Jacob listed with William but was then crossed out. None of our Jacksons can be found on the 1830 census and only William's brother, Anderson Jackson and his father, John Jackson can be found on the 1840 Smyth Co, VA. census.
William does show up on the 1838 & 1839 Smyth Co. VA. tax list and he is not with anyone. After that he disappears from the Smyth & Washington Co VA records. We can only assume that he is on his way to Morgan Co KY but more research in the primary records might shed more light on his whereabouts.
By 1850 William, along with his brother Anderson, has moved to Morgan Co, KY.
William's family is as follows....
William Jackson 40 B VA
Anna (Taylor) Jackson 42 B VA
William Jackson 14 B VA
Victoria Jackson 7 B KY
Ira Jackson 6 B KY
Caldonia Jackson 5 B KY
Josephine Jackson 2 B KY
Henderson Jackson 7/12 B KY
Two things to recognize here. One is that, like his brother's family, Williams's family are all listed as Black. The second item is that 7 year old Victoria was born in Kentucky so that would mean that William has moved out of Smyth Co, VA. before 1843, possibly by 1840. It appears that William was the first of the Jacksons to move to Kentucky. Powhatan stayed in KY permanently and William & Anderson moved on rather quickly. William next settled in Ellisville, Fulton Co, Ill. where he remained until his death. The 1860 Fulton Co, Ill census....
William Jackson 50 VA
Ellen Jackson 18 KY
Ira Jackson 16 KY
Caldonia Jackson 14 KY
Josephine Jackson 13 KY
Ann Jackson 53 VA
William Taylor 24 VA
