District of Kentucky - Green County Sct.

On this 25th day of September, 1820 personally appeared in Green County, it being a Court of record for the County of Green, Joshua Phipps aged 75 years, resident in Green County and district aforesaid, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath declare that he served in the Revolutionary War as follows;

In the Regiment commanded by Col. Mathews (afterwards General) in Capt. Thomas Bowyers Company of the Virginia Line which will more fully appear by my affidavit filed in the Secretary of War office dated 25th May, 1818 and on which issue a Pension Certificate numbered 127 dated 25th June, 1819.

And I do solemn swear that I was a resident of the United States on the 28th day of March, 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift sale or in any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an act of Congress entitled an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and Naval Service of the United States in the Revolutionary War passed on the 18th day of March, 1818 and that I have not nor has any person in trust for me any property or securities, contracts or debts due to me, nor have any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed towit;

One mare, two head of cattle, ten head of hogs, one ass, one old hoe, one bond for $4.00 upon a man who is a known insolvant.

I am in debt about forty dollars, I am a farmer by trade but at this advanced age cannot support myself and family by labor.

I have a wife aged 73 years quite helpless.

At a County Court held for Green County at the Courthouse in Greensburgh this 25th day of September, 1820.

It is ordered to be certified to the Secretary of War, that it is the opinion of said court from creditable and disinterested testimony produced before them, that the total value of the property of Joshua Phipps in the schedule subscribed by him to which he made oath as required by an act of Congress is reasonably worth the sum of forty five dollars.

In testimony of the foregoing being truly copied I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of office this 18th day of October, 1820 and 29th year of the Commonwealth.

On this 14th day of May, 1819 before me, the subscriber, one of the Judges of the Green County Court for the said district, personally appeared Joshua Fips (alias Phipps) age 73 years, resident in Green County in the said district, who being by me first duly sworn, according to law, doth, on his oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the provisions made by the late Act of Congress, entitled "An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War," That he, the said Joshua Fips (or Phipps), enlisted for the term of one year in March or April in the year of 1776 in Botetourt in the state of Virginia in the company commanded by Captain Thomas Bowyers of the regiment commanded by Colonel Mathews in the line of the state of Virginia on the Continental Establishment; that he continued to serve in the said corps, or in the service of The United States, until the full end of twelve months, when he was discharged from service in Busc, Chester or Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that he was in no particular battle while a soldier but after said discharge raised a volunteer company & served as a Lieutenant & was in the battle Guilford and that he is in reduced circumstances, and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support, and that he has no other evidence now in his power of his said services.

I, James Murray Judge, & C. as aforesaid, do certify that it appears, to my satisfaction, that the said Joshua Phips did serve in the Revolutionary War, as stated in the preceding declaration, against the common enemy, for the term of nine months at one time, on the Continental Establishment; and I now transmit the proceedings and testimony taken and had before me, to the Secretary of the Department of War, pursuant to the directions of the aforementioned Act of Congress. I am also satisfied that he needs the assistance of his country for support. Given under my hand this 14th day of May, 1819.
