Henderson Jackson first appears in Washington Co VA on the 1823 tax list and again in 1824 then after that he vanishes from the records of that county. More research in the primary records of SE VA could offer some idea where he might have migrated to.
A check of the census records has turned up some promising results as follows;
1830 Lancaster Twp, Jefferson Co, Indiana has a Henderson Jackson (Free Colored Person) about the right
age to be our man. There are 5 in his household;
1 male 24 - 35
1 female 24 - 35
2 males under 10
1 female under 10
In 1840 and 1850 he can't be found in the census records but in 1860 he appears again in Ross Twp, Vermillion Co, Illinois and is living on a farm in the household of J.P. Jones. He is 59 years old and listed as a Mulatto. No family is with him.
Then in 1870 a Henderson Jackson is again found, this time in Catlin Twp, Vermillion Co, Illinois and he is the head of the household #193, age 69 and listed as Indian. There are 4 other grown men living with and they are all listed as IDIOTIC. There are several other families with persons listed as INSANE, BLIND & IDIOTIC near him and I'm not quite sure what we are looking at here but it appears to be possibly an insane asylum.
IN 1880 again in Catlin TWP, Vermilion Co, Illinois there is an Anderson Jackson age 79 Mullato and he is at the Poor Farm. His birth state is North Carolina but the name and age leaves us wondering who this is. It could be Anderson Jackson of Henry Co, Illinois or even a misinterpretation of Henderson Jackson. I tend to think it's Henderson still living in Catlin Twp but that's just my opinion.
