Application for a new certificate
State of Ohio, Gallia County SS;
On this 27th day of February 1822 before me the subscriber, a justice of the peace for said county of Gallia, personally appeared George Cress who on his oath declares that he is the same person who formerly belonged to the company commanded by Col. Thompson in the service of the United States in the Revolutionary War - That his name was placed on the pension roll of the state of Virginia; That he received a certificate of that fact under the signature and seal of the Secretary of War, which certificate, on or about the 22nd day of December, 1819 he deposited with John A Cummings Esq. of Lexington in the county of Rockbridge in the Commonwealth of Virginia for the purpose of enabling said Cummings to draw his pension, & was informed by said Cummings that his certificate had been forwarded with other papers for the purpose of drawing said pension & had been left, lost or mislaid so that he could not again procure it, & that he the said George Cress has again applied to said Cummings for said pension certificate: viz in October last, and was then also advised that the certificate had not been found; and the said Cummings gave to the person who applied for this deponent the accompanying letter from J L Edwards Esq. with a form for an application for a new certificate - That he is therefore well convinced that the certificate is lost; & is certainly beyond his control-
That he was placed on the pension list from the 7th of Aug. 1809 at two dollars & 50 cents per month, since which the rate has been increased, but he cannot recollect the amount, being upwards of eighty years of age

On this thirtieth day of September 1852 personally appeared before me a notary public in and for said county, Henry Cress aged eighty five years, a resident of Gallia County aforesaid, who being duly sworn according to law, declares and represents, that his father, George Cress, late of Gallia County deceased, had been engaged as a soldier in the Revolutionary War, for his service as such. His name had been enscribed on the pension roll at Richmond in Virginia, and subsequently, that on his change of residence from Virginia to the state of Ohio, and a representation of his disability, from wounds received in the service aforesaid, his pension was increased to ninety six dollars per annum, evidence of which had been forwarded to him, from Washington City, and that within the succeeding twelve months, him the said George Cress died, without receiving the arrearage semiannual payment, leaving a widow who had been married to the said George Cress previous to the Revolutionary War, and who survived his death, same twelve months, therefore as heir to the said George and Christina Cress he now requests and prays that the honorable commissioner of pensions will investigate the case of George Cress, to ascertain the date of his last semiannual payment, and such amount as may be found due him, as well such amount as Christiana Cress his widow was entitled to at her death by virtue of her marriage with the said George which has several amounts he desires may be sent to him, to the case of Lewis Newsom, Gallipolis, Ohio. As son and heir at law of the aforesaid George Cress. He further represents that the evidence of his father being inscribed on the pension roll was transmitted to Washington by Gen E W Tupper many years hence and in consequence of his death, him the said Henry Cress has not been apprised of any attention having been bestowed on his application but as the date of the last payment, to the said George Cress, and can be easily seen at Washington City, and by the appended depositions, when he died, and subsequently the death of Christiana his wife. It can be easily ascertained how much is due the said Henry Cress as heir aforesaid under the various acts of congress in such cases made and provided.
