This day C.J. Callaway personally appeared before me the undersigned Clerk of the Bell County Court and upon his oath states as follows viz: I am 72 years old, have resided in Harlan, now Bell, County, Ky. 45 years. Lived near Thos Jefferson Bingham, who was a Private in Co. I, 24th regt. Ky. Vol. Inft - knew him well years before he enlisted in the U.S. Army and while we supposed said T.J. Bingham was in Hospital at Knoxville, Tenn. in the year 1865 - I think it was. My son Bal. Callaway telegraphed to Knoxville, Tenn. to hear from T.J. Bingham and he got a dispatch that the said T.J. Bingham was dead. My reason for knowing the facts herein stated is that I saw the dispatch and kept it in my possession for several years after which I gave it to Elizabeth Bingham, his wife who is now Elizabeth Hobbs and she said it is lost or mislaid so that she cannot find it.
