Anderson Jackson was recently confirmed as a son of John Jackson and brother to the the other Free Persons of Color Jacksons in the area by DNA testing. A Jackson cousin recently had the DNA test done for her father and the results matched mine almost exactly, 36 of 37 markers. Since no documents exist to confirm what I had expected for a long time, I could only hope that another Jackson would confirm this through DNA.
Anderson Jackson first appears on the 1827 Washington Co, VA. tax list and is on every one through 1834. Then from 1835 until the time he left Virginia in the 1840s he would have been taxed in the newly formed county of Smyth. The 1838 Smyth Co, VA. tax list list everyone in his household along with race and age....
Jackson, Anderson M 33
Jackson, Jane M 30
Jackson, Peggy M 15
Jackson, Fanny Jane M 11
Jackson, William M 8
Jackson, Alexander M 7
Jackson, Sarah Ann M 2
Anderson is then found on the 1840 Smyth Co, VA. census as is his father John. All members of his household are listed as Free Persons of Color (Mullato). Then on the 1842 Smyth Co, VA. tax list it appears as if John Jackson has moved in with Anderson, assuming that the old man Jackson age 70 is John.
Jackson, n/a Y 70
Jackson, Anderson Y 33
Jackson, Jane Y 35
Jackson, Margaret Y 17
Jackson, William Y 13
Jackson, Alexander Y 10
Jackson, Sarah Ann Y 5
Jackson, Lucinda Y 3
A check of the 1850 census indicates that Anderson and his brother William Jackson have left Virginia and relocated to Morgan Co, KY....
Jackson, Anderson 41 B VA
Jackson, Jane 40 B 40 VA
Jackson, William 18 B VA
Jackson, Alexander 16 B VA
Jackson, Sarah 15 B VA
Jackson, Lucinda 11 B VA
Jackson, John 7 B VA
Jackson, Nancy 4 B KY
All members of Anderson's family are listed as Black here. Also worth noting is that John was born in VA and Nancy is born in KY so a move date of 1844/45 for Anderson out of VA is probable. He is on the move again by the 1860 census and and we find him in Lee Township in the city of Albany, Athens Co, OH., listed as follows...
Jackson, Anderson 57 IND Farmer $3000 - $50 Virginia
Jackson, Jane 55 M Virginia
Jackson, Nancy J 10 M Kentucky
Grimes, Thomas 3 M Ohio
Barnhart, Harwin ? 16 Penn
The $3000 is the value of his land and the $50 is the value of his personal property. Anderson is shown here as an Indian while others in the family are listed as Mulatto. The baby Thomas Grimes is the son of Charles W Grimes and Anderson's daughter Sarah Jackson who were married in 1856. By 1860 Charles has moved into Albany town and is working as a bricklayer and his wife Sarah is not found anywhere. From this I can only assume that Sarah has died and their son went to live with her parents. Also worth noting is the marriage of Anderson Jackson and Jane Trent on 3 Sept 1856 in Athens Co. Ohio. which I believe to be our Anderson & Jane.
Looks like the clan is on the move again soon after the Civil War and are residing in Baltimore Township, Henry Co, Iowa.
